BHARAT RATNA

  • Highest civilian award given in India is Bharat Ratna. It is instituted in 2 January 1954.
  • The first recipient of Bharat Ratna is C. Rajagopalachari in 1954.
  • Dr. S. Radhakrishnan and Dr. C.V. Raman also received Bharat Ratna in 1954.
  • First woman to receive Bharat Ratna is Indira Gandhi (1971).
  • Mother Teresa is the second woman to receive Bharat Ratna in 1980.
  • First musician to receive Bharat Ratna is M.S. Subbhalakshmi (1988)
  • First foreigner to receive Bharat Ratna is Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan in 1987, later Nelson Mandela (1990) was given the award.
  • First person to receive Bharat Ratna posthumously is Lal Bahadur Shastri (1966).
  • First woman to be awarded Bharat Ratna posthumously is Aruna Asaf Ali (1995).
  • First film actor to get Bharat Ratna is M.G. Ramachandran (1988).
  • First scientist to get Bharat Ratna is C.V Raman (1954).
  • The person who received the highest civilian award of both the countries of India and Pakistan is Morarji Desai. That is, Bharat Ratna of India and Nishan-e-Pakistan of Pakistan.
  • First sportsman who got Bharat Ratna is Sachin Tendulkar (2014). The youngest person ever to win the Bharat Ratna is Sachin Tendulkar (Age 40).
  • Third Scientist to got Bharat Ratna is C.N.R. Rao (2014).
  • Recipients of Bharat Ratna in 2015 are Atal Bihari Vajpaee & Madan Mohan Malaviya.
  • Atal Bihari Vajpaee is the first BJP leader who got Bharat Ratna. He is the seventh Indian Prime Minister to receive Bharat Ratna.
  • Twelth person to be honored with Bharat Ratna Posthumously is Madan Mohan Malaviya. He is a freedom fighter and a leader of Hindu Maha Sabha. He founded Banaras Hindu University.
  • Recipients of Bharat Ratna in 2019 are Pranab Mukherjee, Bhupen Hazarika, Nanaji Deshmukh.

PADMA VIBHUSHAN

  • Padma Vibhushan was established on Janury 2. 1954.
  • It is the second highest civilian award. This award is given for exceptional and distinguished service in any field including service rendered by government servants.
  • Dr. Satyendra Nath Bose, Dr. Zakir Hussain, Balasaheb Gangadhar Kher, Jigmi Dorje Wangchuk, Nandlal Bose were the first recipients of Padma Vibhushan.
  • The name of Padma Vibhushan when it was established is Pahela Varg (First class).
  • It was given the name Padma Vibhushan in 1955.
  • The award suspended between 1977 and 1980 and between 1992 and 1998.
  • Seven were honoured Padma Vibhushan in 2020.
  • Padma Vibhushan winners 2020 : George Fernandes (Posthumous), Arun Jaitley (Posthumous), Sir Anerood Jugnauth, M. C. Mary Kom, Chhannulal Mishra, Sushma Swaraj (Posthumous), Sri Vishveshateertha Swamiji Sri (Posthumous).

PADMA BHUSHAN

  • The Padma Bhushan award is an Indian civilian decoration established on 2 January 1954. It is the third highest civilian award of the country after Bharat Ratna and Padma Vibhushan.
  • It is honoured to consider the person as an eminent service of a high order to the nation, in any field.
  • 16 Persons were awarded Padma Bhushan in 2020.
  • M. Mumtaz Ali (Sri M) and Neelakanta Ramakrishna Madhava Menon from Kerala got Padma Bhushan in 2020.
  • Neelakanta Ramakrishna Madhava Menon got Padma Bhushan as Posthumous award for his excellence in Public Affairs. M. Mumtaz Ali (Sri M) got Padma Bhushan for Spiritualism.

PADMA SHRI

  • Padma Shri is an award given by the Indian Government generally to Indian citizens to consider them for their distinguished contribution in different spheres of activity in their respective fields.
  • It is the fourth highest civilian award of the country after the Bharat Ratna, the Padma Vibhushan and the Padma Bhushan.
  • 141 persons were conferred Padma Shri awards in 2014. Five from kerala got this award.
  • KS Manilal (Science and Engineering), Dr. N Chandrasekharan Nair (Literature and Education), Mozhikkal Pankajakshi (Arts), M. K. Kunjol (Social Work), Sathyanarayan Mundayoor (Social Work).

MILITARY AWARDS

  • India's highest military award is Param Vir Chakara. It replaced the former British Coloma Victoria Cross.
  • Param Vir Chakra was established on the Republic Day in 26th January 1950.
  • Param Vir Chakra was designed by Savitri Khanolkar.
  • The first Param Vir Chakra was awarded to Major Somnath Sharma.
  • The second highest military decoration in the country is Maha Vir Chakra.
  • The piece time award equivalent to the Param Vir Chakra is Ashoka Chakra.
  • The first to be awarded with Asokha Chakra is Rakesh Sharma.
  • Ashok Chakra award 2019 was won by Nazir Ahmad Wani.
  • The peace time military award equivalent to Maha Vir Chakra is Kirti Chakra.
  • Kirti Chakra was established on 4th Jauuary 1952.
  • Kirti Chakra was earlier known as Ashoka Chakra Class II.
  • Ashoka Chakra Class II was renamed as Kirti Chakra on 27 January 1967.
  • The peace time military award equivalent to Vir Chakra is Shaurya Chakra.
  • The military award that is third in order of precedence of peacetime of gallantry awards is Shaurya Chakra.
  • The only soldier who has been awarded both the Kirti Chakra and the Ashoka Chakra is Col. N.J. Nair.
  • Malayalee recipient of Kirti Chakra in 2014 was Abhilash Tomy.
  • Malayalee recipient of Kirti Chakra in 2013 was Major Anup Joseph Manjali.

JNANPITH AWARD

  • The Jnanpith Award established in May 22, 1961 is awarded for the best creative literary works by any citizen of the country in any of the language mentioned in the VIII Schedule of the Indian constitution.
  • It is the highest literary award in India.
  • Prize amount is Rs. 11 lakh.
  • The award was instituted by Shantiprasad Jain.
  • First recipient of Jnanpith Award is G. Sankara Kurup (1965).
  • First woman to receive the Jnanpith award Ashapoorna Devi (1976)
  • 2019 recipient (55th Award) - Akkitham Achuthan Namboothiri

DADA SAHEB PHALKE AWARD

  • Dada Saheb Phalke Award is awarded for outstanding contribution to Cinema. It was instituted in 1969.
  • The award is named after Dhundiraj Govind Phalke, who is considered as the father of Indian Cinema.
  • He made India's first feature film Raja Harishchandra in 1913.
  • The award comprises of a cash prize of Rupees One million (10 lakh).
  • The first recipient is Devika Rani (1969).
  • Most Recent winner (2018 recipient) - Amitabh Bachchan
  • Adoor Gopala Krishnan (2004) is the only malayalee to recieve this award.

ARJUNA AWARD

  • Arjuna Awards were established in the year, 1961 by the Indian Government to recognize outstanding achievement in the National sports. The award carries a cash prize of Rs. 51akhs.
  • The first keralite to receive Arjuna award is Havildar Balakrishnan (1965).
  • The first keralite woman to receive this award is KC Aleyamma (1975).
  • Subedar Jinson Johnson (Athletics) is the malayalee to receive the award in 2018.
  • 19 players including Cricket Player Ravindra Jadeja got the prestigious Arjuna Award in 2019.

DRONACHARYA AWARD

  • The Dronacharya Award was instituted in 1985. The Award is given to Coaches for their excellence in coaching. Nambiar was the first winner of Dronacharya Award.
  • Dronacharya Award 2019 Winners were Mohinder Singh Dhillon (Athletics), Rambir Singh Khokar (Kabaddi), U. Vimal Kumar (Badminton), Sandip Gupta (Table Tennis), Sanjay Bhardwaj (Cricket) and Merzban Patel (Hockey)

  • Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna is the highest sports award in India.
  • It was launched in the year 1991-92 for honouring the outstanding sportsperson for their achievement in sports.
  • The award is given in the form of a cash award of Its 7.5 lakh, scroll of honour and a plague.
  • First winner of Khel Ratna is Viswanathan Anand (1991-92).
  • First Women winner is Karnam Malleswary (1995-96).
  • First Cricketer to win Khel Ratna Award is Sachin Tendulkar (1997-98).
  • First Keralite to recieve this award is K.M. Beenamol (2002 - 03).
  • Anju Bobby George is the second malayalee to receive this award in 2003-2004.

SHANTI SWAROOP BHATNAGAR AWARD

  • Shanti Swaroop Bhatnagar Awards are given to young scientists in India.
  • It is considered as one among the top multidisciplinary science awards given in the country. It was instituted in 1958. The first winner is Kariamanickam Srinivasa Krishnan for Physical Sciences in 1958.
  • This award carries a cash of 5 lakhs. This award is given by Council for Scientific and Industrial Research.
  • Shanti Swaroop Bhatnagar is the first director of Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR).
  • The researchers below the age of 45 years are nominated for this award.
  • Bhatnagar Award is popularly known as the Nobel Prize of India.

  • First recipient of Saraswathi Samman is Harivamsh Rai Bachan (1991).
  • The award carries a cash prize of Rs. 10 lakhs.
  • Saraswathi Samman 2019 was won by Vasdev Mohi for his book "Chequebook" (Short Story Series) in Sindhi Language.

  • The award is given to persons or institutions for promoting national integration and understanding.
  • Indira Gandhi Award for National Integration was instituted in 1985.
  • The award carries a cash prize of Rs. 5 lakhs.
  • This Award is given on Martyrdom Day of Indira Gandhi, 31st October.
  • Some of the winners of the award are Swami Ranganathananda (1987), M. S. Subbulakshmi (1990), Rajiv Gandhi (Posthumous), APJ Abdul Kalam and so on.
  • The recipient of 2017 and is 2019 is Chandi Prasad Bhatt.

KALIDAS SAMMAN

  • Kalidas Samman is given annually by the Government of Madhya Pradesh.
  • The award carries a cash prize of two lakh rupees.
  • Kalidas Samman was first awarded in 1980 -81.
  • First winners - Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer, Mallikarjun Mansur (Classical Music).
  • The first recipient of Kalidas Samman for plastic Arts is K.G.Subramanyan (1981-82).
  • The first recipient of Kalidas Samman for theatre is Sombhu Mitra (1982-83).
  • The first recipient of Kalidas Samman for dance is Rukminidevi Arundale (1983 - 84).
  • Winner of Kalidas Samman 2010 - 11 was Anupam kher (Theatre).

NATIONAL FILM AWARDS

  • The National Film Awards is the most prestigious film awards given by the Indian Government. It is established in 1954. The award is given by Directorate of Film Award.
  • Every year, a national panel would be appointed by the government. They selects the winners and President will present the Awards.
  • The first winner of best film (1954) is ‘Shyam Aayi’, which is a Marathi film directed by PK Atra. The ‘Neelakuyil’ of Malayalam received Silver Lotus Award for Second Best Film.
  • It was from 1968 onwards, Best Actor, Actress Award is introduced. Uttam Kumar is the first best actor and Nargis Dutt is the first best actress. Shabana Asmi is the most winner of Best Actress (5 times). Amitabh Bachchan is the most winner of Best Actor (4 times).

INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL OF INDIA, IFFI (2019 Winners)

  • The IFFI founded in 1952 is one of the most significant film festivals conducted every year in Asia. Goa is the continuous venue of the Film Festival.
  • The 50th International Film Festival of India was held recently in November 2019 in Goa. The winners are as follows.
  • Best Film (Golden Peacock): Particles (Directed by Blaise Harrison, French)
  • Best Director (Silver Peacock): Lijo Jose Pellissery (Jallikattu, Malayalam)
  • Best Actor: Seu Jorge (Marighella, Brazilian)
  • Best Actress: Usha Jadhav (Mai Ghat: Crime No 103/2015, Marathi)

KENDRA SAHITHYA ACADEMY AWARD

  • Kendra Sahithya Academy Award is a literary honour in India given by the Sahitya Akademi, which is the National Academy of Letters.
  • It was instituted in 1954, the award consist of a plaque and a cash prize of one lakh.
  • V. Madhusoodanan Nair is winner of Kendra Sahithya Academy Award in 2019 for his poetry work “Achan Piranna Veedu”.
  • Yuva Puraskar and Bala Sahitya Puraskar are other literary honors in India given by Sahitya Akademi.

MOORTIDEVI AWARD

  • The Moortidevi Award is a literary award given every year in India presented by the Bharatiya Jnanpith Organization. It is instituted in 1961.
  • The prize includes an amount of Rs. 4 lakhs, a plaque, a statue of Saraswati and a shawl.
  • It was first awarded in 1983 and the first winner is C. K. Nagaraja Rao for his work “Pattamahadevi Shantala Devi” (Kannada).
  • The 2019 winner is Vishwanath Tiwari for his work “Asti Aur Bhavti” (Hindi).
