AWARDS AND HONOURS IN KERALA

ODAKKUZHAL AWARD
- Odakkuzhal Award is a literary award given annually to writers for their excellent work in Malayalam language.
- The Odakkuzhal Award was given by Guruvayoorappan Trust, founded by G. Sankara Kurup to memorialize the Jnanapith Award he had won.
- The first Recipient of the Award is Vennikulam Gopalakurup (1968).
- Recipient in 2018 is EV Ramakrishnan (Malayala novalinte desakalangal).
- Recipent in 2019 is N Prabhakaran (Mayamanushyar).
KERALA SAHITYA AKADEMI AWARD
- Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award instituted in 1958 by the Kerala Sahitya Akademi is given annually to Malayalam writers for their excellent literary work.
- The Award categories include Best Poetry, Best Novel, Best Short Story, Best Drama, Best Literary Criticism, Best Biography and Autobiography, Best Travelogue, Best Humour, Best Translation, Best Children’s Literature, Best Scholarly Literature, Overall Contributions , Fellowship and for Miscellaneous Works.
KERALA KALAMANDALAM AWARD
- Kerala Kalamandalam Award was instituted by Kerala Kalamandalam to honor great performers with awards. Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavatar is the first recipient of Suvarna Mudra and Natyacharya Mani Madhava Chakyar is the recipient of Fellowship. The institution also presents the annual Kalamandalam award.
- The fellowships consist of a cash prize of Rs 50,000 along with citation, plaque and ponnada and the Kalamandalam awards consist of a cash prize of Rs 30,000 along with citation, plaque and ponnada.
EZHUTHACHAN AWARD
- Named after father of Malayalam literature and medieval poet, Thunchath Ezhuthachan, the award carries Rs.5 lakh, citation and a statuette.
- It is the highest literary award given by Government of Kerala.
- This award is announced every year on 1st November.
- First Recipient of the Award is Sooranad Kunjanpillai (1993).
- Second Recipient of the Award is Thakazhi Sivasankara Pillai (1994).
- The first women winner is Balamaniamma (1995).
- 2018 recipient is M. Mukundan and 2019 recipient is Anand.
VALLATHOL AWARD
- Vallathol Award is instituted in 1991 by the Vallathol Sahithya Samithi for the overall contributions to Malayalam literature.
- The award carries a cash prize of Rs.1,11,111 and citation.
- First Recipient is Pala Narayanan Nair (1991).
- First women recipient is Balamaniamma (1993).
- 2018 Recipient is M. Mukundan and 2019 Recipient is Paul Zacharia.
VAYALAR AWARD
- The Vayalar Award is presented for the finest literary work in Malayalam Language. The award was established in 1977 in memory of renowned lyricist, Vayalar Ramavarma by the Vayalar Ramavarma Memorial Trust.
- The award carries a sum of Rs.25,000, silver plate and a certificate. It is given annually on October 27, which is the death anniversary of Vayalar Ramavarma.
- The first Recipient is Lalithambika Antharjanam (Agni Sakshi) in 1977.
- 2018 recipient is K. V. Mohan Kumar (Ushnarashi) and 2019 recipient is VJ James (Nireeshwaran).
MATHRUBHUMI LITERARY AWARD
- Mathrubhumi Literary Award is instituted in 2001 by the Mathrubhumi Printing and Publishing Company Limited. The award carries a sum of Rs 3 lakh in cash, a citation and a plaque.
- First Awardee is Thikkodiyan (P. Kunjanandan Nair) in 2001.
- 2018 Awardee is NS Madhavan and 2019 Awardee is UA Khader.
SWATHI SANGEETHA PURASKARAM
- Swathi Puraskaram is the highest honor instituted by the Government of Kerala to honor an artiste of national eminence. The award comprises of a cash prize of rupees one lakh, a citation and a medal.
- First Awardee is the Carnatic musician, Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer (1997).
- 2016 Awardee is Mangad.K.Natesan (Carnatic musician).
- 2020 Awardee is L. Subramaniam (Carnatic Music, Violinist).
KERALA STATE FILM AWARDS
- The Kerala State Film Awards are given to honor both artistic and technical fineness of professionals in the Malayalam Film Industry.
- The annual presentation of awards was started in 1969 by the Cultural Department of Kerala government and it continued till 1997. From 1998 onwards, the awards were presented by the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy on behalf of the Kerala Government.
- The malayalam film which got first state award for best film is Kumara Sambhavam (1969 – directed by P. Subramoniyam). Sathyan is the first recipient of Best Actor Award for his performance in Kadalpalam (1969), whereas Sheela is the best actress for her performance in Kallichellamma (1969).

JC DANIEL AWARD
- The Kerala Government established the JC Daniel Award as a part of the Kerala State Film Awards, to honor the legends for their lifetime achievements in Malayalam cinema.
- It is the highest award given by Kerala Government in film field. Award Amount is 5 lakh with a statuette and a citation.
- From 1998 onwards, the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy hosts the award on behalf of Cultural Affairs Department, Kerala Government.
- First Recipient is TE Vasudevan (1992)
- 2017 Recipient is Sreekumaran Thampi and 2018 Recipient is Sheela.

MUTTATHU VARKEY AWARD
- Muttathu Varkey Award was constituted in 1992 by Muttathu Varkey's Foundation in memory of novalist, Muttathu Varkey.
- The Award is given for contributions to the field of Malayalam literature
- The award comprises Rs. 50,000 in cash, a citation and a statuette.
- The first recipient of award is OV Vijayan (1992).
- The second recipient of award is Vaikom Muhammad Basheer (1993).
- 2018 Recipient is KR Meera (Aarachar) and 2019 Recipient is Benyamin.
PADMA PRABHA LITERARY AWARD
- The award instituted in memory of MK Padma Prabha Gowder known for his contribution for development of Wayanad district.
- The award comprises of a cash prize of Rs 75,000.
- It is given by Padma Prabha Memorial Trust.
- The first recipient of Padmaprabha Award is Puthoor Unnikrishnan (1996).
- 2018 recipient is Kalpatta Narayanan and 2019 recipient is Santosh Echikanam.
GV RAJA AWARD
- The award instituted by the Kerala State Sports Council carries a purse of Rs. 3 lakh, Plaque and a Certificate for GV Raja Awardees. Olympian Suresh Babu Lifetime Achievement Award carries a purse of Rs. 2 lakh and citation
- It is the highest sporting honor in Kerala.
