Balimela Hydroelectric Project

Balimela Hydroelectric Project is erected in the Sileru River of Balimela Town in the Malkangiri District of Odisha. The first unit of power plant was commissioned in 1975 with an approved and installed capacity of 510 MW. The type of project is Major and the status of power plant is completed and is working fully. The source of water for the generation of power is Sileru River. The plant is located in the main reservoir of Balimela. The name of the dam, where the hydroelectric project is located is Balimela. The power plant is owned by the Government of Odisha and the operator of the power plant is Odisha Hydro Power CorporationLtd (OHPC).

The beneficiary states of the power plant are Odisha and its neighbouring states including Jharkhand, West Bengal, Chhattisgarh and Andhra Pradesh. The power project was completed in 1977 and soon it started its operation. The number of turbines in the plant is eight and is having six turbines of 60 MW each and two turbines of 75 MW each. The type of turbine used in the plant is Vertical Francis. The manufacturer of turbine of power project is by the LMW Russia and OJSC PM Russia. Whereas the manufacturer of generator of power project is by the Electrosila Russia. The Unit Sizes of power plant is 510 MW. There are eight units in operation and all the eight units are commissioned.
