Bhakra Hydroelectric Project

Bhakra Hydroelectric Project has two power houses –Bhakra Left Bank Power House and Bhakra Right Bank Power House. The Approved and Installed capacity of the combined power houses is 1325 Megawatt. The project type is Major (since the installed capacity is greater than 25 MW). The status of the power plant is completed and are Operational. The source of water is Satluj River. The Basin is Indus River, till the area of international boundary. The hydroelectric region is Northern Hydro Electric Region. The Power Plant is owned and operated by Bhakra Beas Management Board under Central Government.

The Beneficiary States of the power plant are Himachal Pradesh and its neighbouring states. The Bhakra Left Bank Power House was completed its construction in 1961 and it started its operation in 1961 itself. Similarly the Bhakra Right Bank Power house was completed its construction in 1968. The type of Turbine used in both houses are Francis. The turbine and generator manufacturer of the Bhakra Left Bank Power House are Hitachi Japan and AEI - UK respectively. Similarly the turbine and generator manufacturer of the Bhakra Right Bank Power House are LMZ – USSR and Esil – USSR respectively.

The total Unit Sizes of both the power plant are 1325 Megawatt. i.e., 540 MW by Bhakra Left Bank Power Bank and 785 MW by Bhakra Right Bank Power House. There are a total of 10 units from two power houses. All the units are commissioned.The installed capacity of Bhakra Right Bank Power House is 785 Megawatt (5 units x157 Megawatt) and that of Bhakra Left Bank Power House is 540 Megawatt (5 Units x108 Megawatt).
