Indian paramilitary force is the World's second largest paramilitary Force (first : People's Armed Police of China).

Assam Rifles

  • The oldest Paramilitary Force in India.
  • Assam Rifles was formed in 1835.
  • Former name of Assam Rifles is Cachar Levy.
  • The name Assam Rifles was adopted in 1917.
  • Headquarters — Shillong (Meghalaya)
  • Motto — Friends of the Hill People
  • Size — 46 Battalions
  • Role — Internal Security
  • The Paramilitary force known as 'The Sentinels of the North - East' is Assam Rifles.

Coast Guard

  • Indian Coast Guard is the maritime para military Force of India.
  • Indian Coast Guard was formed in 18th August 1978.
  • Its mission is the protection of India's maritime interests and enforcement of maritime law with jurisdiction over the territorial water of India.
  • Headquarters — New Delhi
  • Motto — Vayam Rakshamah (We Protect)
  • The Committee which associated with the formation of Indian Coast Guard is Rustamji Committee.
  • National Coast Guard Day — 1 February
  • First Coast Guard Academy in India - Azhikkal in Kannur (under construction)
  • The Indian Coast Guard Academy is a training establishment for Indian Coast Gaurd.

Special Frontier Force (SFF)

  • SFF formed in 14 November 1962 after lndo-China war.
  • Headquarters - Chakrata, Uttarakhand
  • Functions of SET — Counter-terrorism
  • SFF is sometimes referred to as Establishment 22
  • It was originally raised to play a role behind enemy lines in China in the event of a war.

Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF)

  • The largest paramilitary organisation of India is CRPF.
  • CRPF was formed on 27 July 1939.
  • Motto — Service and Loyalty
  • An elite CRPF unit tasked to provide armed protection to Parliament House is Parliament Duty Group.
  • The first paramilitary force to establish women battalion is CRPF.
  • The CRPF has three battalions staffed by women.
  • The first Mahila Battalion No. 88 was established in 1986 and its headquarters is at New Delhi.
  • The Second Mahila Battalion 135 was established in 1996 at Gandhinagar, Gujarat.
  • The Third Mahila Battalion Number 213 is located at Ajmer, Rajasthan.
  • The specialised outfit of the CRPF that check environmental degradation and sustain the regeneration of local flora & fauna is Green Force.
  • The specialised unit of CRPF to counter the Naxalite problem in India is Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (COBRA).
  • COBRA was formed in 2008.

Border Security Force (BSF)

  • BSF is a border protecting force of the Government of India.

  • Headquarters - New Delhi
  • Founding Father of the BSF is K.F. Rustomji .
  • First Director General of BSF is also K.F. Rustomji
  • The paramilitary force that decided to recruit women officers in 2013 is BSF.
  • Border Security Force (Water Wing) is a special unit working under Border Security Force of India. The BSF water wing guards around 1399 km of riverine boundary of India.

Central Industrial Security Force (CISF)

  • Largest Industrial Security Force in the World
  • Set up on : 10 March 1969. (in its present form on 15 June 1983).
  • Headquarters - New Delhi
  • Aim : Provides security cover to industrial units.
  • Motto : Protection and Security
  • The Paramilitary force that guard the Tajmahal is CISF.

Home Guard

  • The voluntary force that tasked as an auxiliary to the Indian Police is Home Guard.
  • Established in 1946 (reorganized in 1962)
  • States doesn't exist Home Guard is Arunachal Pradesh and Kerala.

Indo-Tibetan Border Police

  • Established on October 24, 1962
  • Headquarters – New Delhi
  • The Motto of ITBP is Shaurya, Dridata, Karm Nishtha.
  • First Director General of the ITBP is Sardar Balbir Singh.
  • The water wing of ITBP was formed in 30th August 2011. It is in charge of patrolling the riverine borders of Indian Himalayan regions.

Railway Protection Force (RPF)

  • It is charged with protecting the Indian Railways.
  • RPF was formed in the year 1954

Rashtriya Rifles (RF)

  • It was established by General SF Rodrigues and was modified by General B.C. Joshi in 1990.
  • It is an indian paramilitary force set up in Jammu and Kashmir.

Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB)

  • It was originally setup in May 1963 as Special Service Bureau.
  • Motto- 'Service, Security and Brotherhood’
  • Headquarters — New Delhi
  • The aim of SSB is to promote sense of security among the people living in the border area and to prevent trans-border crimes, smuggling aid other illegal activities.

National Security Guard (NSG)

  • Formed — 1984
  • Motto — Sarvatra Sarvottam Suraksha
  • Aim — Counter terrorism activities
  • NSG is also known as Black Cats

Special Protection Group (SPG)

  • Formed-1985
  • SPG is responsible for the protection of the Prime Minister of India and other VIPs.
  • Motto of SPG : Bravery, Dedication, Security.
  • The paramilitary force formed after the assassination of Indira Gandhi is SPG.
  • SPG was formed on the recommendation of Birbal Nath Committee.

Territorial Army

  • It is an organisation of volunteers who receive military training for a few days in a year so that in case of an emergency they can be mobilized for the defence of the country.
  • Formed in 1949
  • First and only actor to confer the title of Lt. Colonel in Territorial Army is Mohanlal.
  • First Cricketer to confer the title of Lt. Colonel in Territorial Army is Kapil Dev.
  • Second Cricketer to confer the title of Lt. Colonel in Territorial Army is M.S. Dhoni.
  • First to get Lt. Colonel title of Territorial Army for the Contribution in the field of shooting is Abhinav Bindra.

National Cadet Crops (NCC)

  • Formed —15 July 1948
  • Motto — Unity and Discipline
  • Headquarters — New Delhi
  • The students of high schools, colleges and universities are eligible for joining NCC. They are named as NCC cadets.
  • NCC was formed by the recommendation of the H.N. Kunzru committee.
  • The main aim of NCC is to develop character, companionship, obedience, leadership, secular outlook, courage of adventure, and ideals of noble service among the Indian youth.

Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF)

  • IPKF was formed under the accord between the countries : India and Sri Lanka.
  • The Indo - Sri Lanka Peace Accord was signed in Colombo on July 1987 between Rajiv Gandhi and J.R. Jayewardene.
  • The main aim of IPKF was to end the Sri Lankan civil war between LTTE and Sri Lankan Military.
  • The Prime Minister who send the IPKF in Sri Lanka is Rajiv Gandhi.
  • The Prime Minister who ordered to withdraw IPKF from Sri Lanka is VP Singh.
