First Legislative Assembly

  • The first Kerala Legislative Assembly was formed on 5th April 1957.
  • The state legislature consisted of 126 members plus a nominated Anglo Indian.
  • The first ministry was set up in 1st November 1956. On 16th March 1957, 128 members took the charge in the legislative assembly.
  • The first general elections to the Kerala state Legislature were held in February and March 1957.
  • First elected government of Unified Kerala is Communist Government headed by Chief Minister, EMS Namboothiripad.
  • It was the first time a communist government was democratically elected to power through Ballot.
  • Some independent parties supported CPI and thereby they got 65 of the 126 seats.
  • The protest named, "Vimochana Samaram" was happened on June 12, 1959 which was led by Mannathu Padmanabhan to put an end to the Communist Ministry.
  • On 31st July 1959, the EMS Ministry was dismissed. State came under the Presidential rule under the Article 356, for the first time began on 31st July 1959.

Second Legislative Assembly

  • Interim election was conducted in February 1960.
  • On 9th February the second Legislative Assembly of Kerala was set up.
  • A coalition ministry under the leadership of Congress and PSP came in to power.
  • The ministry was in power for 31 months. With the appointment of Pattom Thanu pillai as the governor of Punjab, the ministry resigned.

Third Legislative Assembly

  • CPI M front had 116 members in an Assembly which had a total strength of 133 members. On 6th March 1967, E.M.S. Namboothiripad ministry came in to power.
  • D. Damodaran Potti of Indian Socialist Party was elected as the speaker.
  • On 24th October 1969, E.M.S. submitted his resignation.

Fourth Legislative Assembly

  • On 4th October 1970, fourth assembly came into existence.
  • Achutha Menon became the Chief Minister of Kerala in 1970 and served the position till 25th of March 1977.

Fifth Legislative Assembly

  • It was formed on 22nd March 1977 under the leadership of K. Karunakaran.
  • K. Karunakaran resigned the Chief Ministership following a court verdict in connection with the ‘Rajan Case’.
  • On 27th April A.K. Antony formed a coalition ministry. Antony resigned in October 1978.
  • P.K. Vasudevan Nair, leader of communist party of India formed the coalition ministry on 7th October 1979.
  • C.H. Muhammed Koya formed another ministry which lasted only a few weeks.
  • On November 13th the Governor dissolved the assembly.

Sixth Legislative Assembly

  • Left Democratic Front under CPI (M) got 93 assembly seats in the Election.
  • On 25th January 1980, a 17 member ministry took up under the leadership of E.K. Nayanar.
  • After twenty two months Nayanar submitted his resignation following the withdrawal of Kerala Congress.
  • A new ministry under the leadership of K. Karunakaran came into power on 28th December 1981.
  • On 17th March 1982, the sixth Assembly was provoked and it leads to the forced presidential rule in the state.

Seventh Legislative Assembly

  • Legislative Assembly Election in May 19. K Karunakaran again becomes Chief Minister in May 24.
  • On 19th May 1982, A ministry under K. Karunakaran (UDF) was sworn in on 24th May.

Eighth Legislative Assembly

  • Left Democratic Front came to power in March 1987.
  • EK Nayanar became the chief minister of Kerala in March 26 upon the 8th general election held in March 23.

Ninth Legislative Assembly

  • United Democratic Front under the leadership of K. Karunakaran came back to power (12th June 1991).
  • In 1995 A.K. Antony resigned from the cabinet of central government and took the charge of Chief Minister replacing K. Karunakaran.
  • Karunakaran subsequently elected to the Rajyasabha on his resignation of the membership of the assembly.

Tenth Legislative Assembly

  • LDF won in Legislative Assembly Election. EK Nayanar became chief minister in May 20.
  • E.K. Nayanar ministry (1996-2001) came to power.

11th Legislative Assembly

  • A.K. Antony became the Chief Minister (May 2001).
  • A.K Antony resigned on 2004 and Oommen Chandy sworn in as the Chief Minister.

12th Legislative Assembly

  • V.S. Achuthanandan became Chief Minister (13-5-2006)
  • Oommen Chandy - Opposition Leader

13th Legislative Assembly

  • Oommen Chandy - Chief Minister (2011 - 2016).
  • V.S. Achuthanandan - Opposition Leader

14th Legislative Assembly

  • Pinarayi Vijayan, CPI(M) (LDF) - Chief Minister (2016 - )
