The Thermal Power Plant is sited in the Murshidabad district of West Bengal in India. The primary fuel of power plant is coal, and is the plant is under the control of NTPC.The other details of Farakka Super Thermal Power Plant are as follows.

The Farakka Super Thermal Power Plant is commissioned in 1986. It has an approved capacity of 2100 Mega Watts. Its installed capacity is also 2100 Mega Watts. The status of this power station is Operational. The source of coal for the production of electricity in Farakka Power Station is Rajmahal Coalfield Mines. Also the source of water is from Farakka Feeder Canal. The primary fuel used for the generation of power is Coal. The power station is owned by National Thermal Power Corporation Limited. The Beneficiary States of this farakka super thermal power plant are Assam, Bihar, Jharkhand, Orissa, Sikkim, Tripura and West Bengal. Damodar Valley Corporation is also getting benefits from farakka power plant.

The Approved Investment for first stage is INR730.93 Crore and for second stage, it is INR 2453.29 Crore. The unit sizes for three stages were Stage I = 3x 200 Megawatt, Stage II = 2x 500 Megawatt, Stage III = expansion of Farakka STPP, which is approved with the addition of one 500 Megawatt unit.

There are ten units in operation and they are from Unit 1 to Unit 6. The first unit was commissioned in January 1986 with an installed capacity of 200 Megawatts. The second unit was commissioned in December 1986 with an installed capacity of 200 Megawatts. The third unit was commissioned in August 1987 with an installed capacity of 200 Megawatts. The fourth unit was commissioned in September 1992, with an installed capacity of 500 Megawatts. The fifth unit was commissioned in February 1994 with an installed capacity of 500 Megawatt and the sixth unit was commissioned in March 2011 with an installed capacity of 500 Megawatt.
