The Guru Nanak Dev Thermal Plant located at Bathinda village of Bathinda district is one of the three major thermal power stations in the state of Punjab (the further being located at Lehra Mohabat and Ropar). The plant is named after the first guru of Sikh religion, Sri Guru Nanak Dev. It is not a big, but medium large power station with four units that were started its construction in the initial years of 1970s and completed its construction in 1982. The power plant generate up to 440 Megawatt of power that meets the immense irrigation requirements of lower Punjab.

Due to some claims raised that the power station became a threat to the nearby surrounding area and not met the environment safety standards, which leads to the severe health problems, not only in Bathinda itself, but also neighbouring villages and settlements, mainly fly ash became a problem. Having produced power for around 43 years, the guru nanak dev thermal power plant shut down permanently on Sep 27, 2017.

Guru Nanak Dev Thermal Power Plant is commissioned in 1974 September. The approved capacity of the thermal power plant is 440 Megawatt and the installed capacity of the power plant is also 440 Megawatt. The source of coal used earlier for the generation of power is Coalmines of Bihar, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand. And the water source is canal water. The primary fuel used for the generation of power is Coal. The coal type is Bituminous coal and Oil. The Boiler, Turbine and Generator Manufacturer of Guru Nanak Dev Thermal Power Plant is Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL). The owner of the thermal power plant is Punjab State Power Corporation Limited. The beneficiary states of the thermal power plants were Punjab and its neighbouring states. The cost of project has crossed 115 crores. The status of the project is closed in 2017.

The Unit Sizes of the Thermal Power Plant is 440 Megawatt (4 units x 110 Megawatt). All the units are now closed. Earlier the Guru Nanak Dev Thermal Plant has commissioned four units and they are first, second, third and fourth units. The first unit is commissioned in 22 September 1974 with an installed capacity of 110 Megawatt. The second unit is commissioned in 19 September 1975 with an installed capacity of 110 Megawatt. After that the third unit is commissioned in 29 March 1978 with an installed capacity of 110 Megawatt. Finally the fourth unit is commissioned in 31 January 1979 with an installed capacity of 110 Megawatt.
