Kahalgaon Super Thermal Power Stationis situated in the Kahalgaon town in the Bhagalpur district of Bihar, India. This thermal power plant is one among the coal based power plants under the control of NTPC. The coal for the power plant is obtained from the Rajmahal coalfield of ECL. The Source of water for the Kahalgaon plant is Ganga River.

Kahalgaon Super Thermal Power Plant is commissioned in 1992. It has an approved capacity of 2340 Megawatt including 840 Megawatt for Stage 1 and 1500 Megawatt for Stage 2. The installed capacity of this super thermal power plant is 2340 Megawatt. The status of this thermal plant is operational. The source of coal for the production of power is from Rajmahal Coal Fields. The source of water is from Ganga Basin. The primary fuel used is Coal. The owner and controller of Kahalgaon Super Thermal Power Plant is National Thermal Power Corporation Limited. The beneficiary States of this Kahalgaon Super Thermal Power Plant were Bihar, Jharkhand, Orissa, Sikkim and West Bengal. The approved investment is INR 2040 crore for Stage 1 and INR 4000 crore for Phase 1 of Stage 2. Also for Phase 2 of Stage 2, the investment is INR 1870 crore.

The unit sizes of power plant is 4 x 210 Megawatt and 3x500Megawatt. There are seven units in operation and they are Unit 1 to Unit 7. The first unit is commissioned in March 1992 with an installed capacity of 210 Megawatt. The second unit is commissioned after two years of commissioning of first unit and it was in March 1994 with an installed capacity of 210 Megawatt. Also the third unit is commissioned in March 1995 with an installed capacity of 210 Megawatt. The fourth unit is commissioned in March 1996 with an installed capacity of 210 Megawatt.

The fifth unit is commissioned in March 2007 with an installed capacity of 500 Megawatt. The sixth unit is commissioned in March 2008 with an installed capacity of 500 Megawatt. And the seventh unit is commissioned in June 2009 with an installed capacity of 500 Megawatt.
