Koyna (Pophali) Hydroelectric Project
Koyna (Pophali) Hydroelectric Project is the biggest completed hydroelectric power station in the country. Koyna Hydroelectric Project is erected at the Koyna River in the Pophali town of Ratnagiri district in Maharashtra. The power plant is commissioned in 1967. It has an approved and installed capacity of 1960 MW. The type of project is Major as it has a total installed capacity greater than 25 MW. The Type of Power Plant is Dam on river with reservoir. The status of project is functional. Shivaji Sagar is the Main Reservoir of the project. The hydroelectric region of power station is Western Hydroelectric Region.
The power plant is owned by Maharashtra State Government and the operating company of the project is Maharashtra State Electricity Board (MSEB). The beneficiary states of power plant are Maharashtra and its nearby states. The power project is completed in 1967 and after that it started its operation. The total number of turbines in the power plant is eighteen. The capacity of first four turbines is 70 MW per turbine. Similarly the capacity from fifth turbine to 12th turbine is 80 MW. The thirteenth to sixteenth turbine has 250 MW and 17th and 18th turbines have 20 MW each.
The Type of Turbine is Pelton for first eight units and Francis for the rest of the eight units. The turbine manufacturers of this hydroelectric power station are Neyrpic France, Charmilles Switzerland and BHEL Bhopal. Whereas the Generator Manufacturers are AEG Germany and Bharat Heavy Electricals limited. The unit size of the power plant is 1960 MW and there are a total of 18 units in the power plant. All these eighteen units are commissioned.
