Mettur Thermal Power Station
Mettur Thermal Power Station is located in the Mettur dam village of Salem district in Tamil Nadu, India. This is the first inplant thermal power of India TANGEDCO.
Mettur Thermal Power Station is commissioned in 7 January 1987. The approved capacity of the thermal power plant is 1440 Megawatt and the installed capacity is also 1440 Megawatt. The status of the power plant is Operational. The primary fuel used for the generation of power is Coal. The type of coal used is Bituminous coal. The source of coal is from Mahanadi Coalfields Limited and Eastern Coalfields Limited. The water source of the plant is Mettur Dam.
The first to fourth units of power plant are using the Sub Critical Technology and the fifth unit is using Super Critical technology. The Mettur Thermal Power Station is owned and operated by the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board and TANGEDCO. The beneficiary states of the Thermal Power Station are Tamil Nadu and its neighbouring states. The Approved Cost of thermal power plant is INR 384 crores for first and second units, 351 crores for third and fourth units. The approved cost of Mettur Thermal power station II is INR 3550 crores (Unit 5).
The Unit Sizes of the power plant are 1440 Megawatt (210 MW x 4, 600 MW x 1). There are five units in Operation and they are from first to fifth units. In Stage 1, the first and second units are commissioned in 07 January 1987 and 01 December 1987 respectively with an installed capacity of 210 Megawatt for each units. Similarly in Stage 2, the third and fourth units are commissioned in 22 March 1989 and 27 March 1990 respectively with an installed capacity of 210 Megawatt for each units. In Stage 3, fifth unit is commissioned in 12 October 2013 with an installed capacity of 600 Megawatt
