Neyveli Thermal Power Station

Neyveli Thermal Power Station consists of two distinct units - Neyveli Thermal Power Plant Phase I and Neyveli Thermal Power Plant Phase II, capable of generating 1020 Megawatt and 1,470 Megawatt respectively. It is functioned by Neyveli Lignite Corporation.

Neyveli Thermal Power Station Phase I

Neyveli Thermal Power Station Phase 1 is commissioned in May 1962. All the 11 units of Power Station is commissioned between May 1962 and September 1970. The Approved capacity of the thermal power plant is 1020 Megawatt and the installed capacity is also 1020 Megawatt. The status of the thermal power plant is Operational. The source of coal for the generation of power is from Neyveli lignite mine. The primary fuel used is Coal and the type of coal used is Lignite. The Neyveli Lignite Thermal Power station Phase 1 is owned and operated by the Neyveli Lignite Corporation (NLC). The manufacture of Boiler is done by Taganrog Metallurgical Plant. Similarly the manufacture of Turbine and Generator is done by the LMZ and Electrosila respectively. These equipments for the manufacture of Boiler, Turbine and Generator is imported from the Soviet Union under Indo-Soviet alliance programme. The beneficiary states of the thermal power plant is Tamil Nadu and its neighbouring states. There are eleven units in operation with a unit size of 1020 Megawatt.

The first to sixth units are installed with a capacity of 50 Megawatt for each units. After that seventh to ninth units are installed with a capacity of 100 Megawatt for each units. Also the tenth and eleventh units are installed with a capacity of 210 Megawatt.

Neyveli Thermal Power Station Phase II

Neyveli Thermal Power Station is commissioned in March 1986 and the last unit is commissioned in June 1993. The power station is owned and operated by the Neyveli Lignite Corporation (NLC). The approved capacity of the thermal power plant is 1470 Megawatt and also the installed capacity of the thermal power plant is 1470 Megawatt. The source of coal is from Neyveli Lignite Mine.The Neyveli Thermal Power Station Phase 2 comprises of 7 units with 210 Megawatt for each units. All the units are commissioned in two stages. The first stage comprises of 630 Megawatt (3 units x 210 Megawatt) and second stage comprises of 840 Megawatt (4 units x 210 Megawatt).
