North Chennai Thermal Power Station
North Chennai Thermal Power Station (NCTPS) is located at about 25 kilometers away from the Chennai city and is in the North Chennai TPS of Athipattu in Chennai area of Thiruvallur district in Tamil Nadu. The plant has a total nameplate capacity of 1830 Megawatt. The plant is owned by Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO).The power project is divided into two as NCTPS and NCTPS – II. NCTPS – II is located adjacent to NCTPS complex on northern side.
The North Chennai Thermal Power Station is commissioned in 25 October 1994. The Plant has an approved capacity of 1830 Megawatt. The status of the thermal power station is Operational. The primary fuel used for the generation of power is Coal. The type of coal used is Bituminous coal. The source of coal is from Mahanadi Coalfields Limited and Eastern Coalfields Limited. The source of water is from Desalination plant. The cooling water used for the cooling of plant is from the sea at the Ennore port area. The type of plant is Sub Critical. The power plant is owned and operated by the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board and TANGEDCO. The beneficiary states of the Thermal Power Plant are Tamil Nadu and otherneighbouring South Indian states.
The Unit size of the thermal power plant are 1830 Megawatt (3 units x 210 MW, 2 units x 600 MW). There are five units in operation and they are from first to fifth units. In Stage 1, the first, second and third units are commissioned in 25 October 1994, 27 March 1995 and 24 February 1996 respectively with an installed capacity of 210 Megawatt for each units. In Stage 2, the fourth and fifth units are commissioned in 3 March 2014 and 8 May 2014 with an installed capacity of 600 Megawatt.
