The power plant is owned and operated by Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam. There are thirteen functioning units, all of which are coal-fired thermal power stations. The machinery for the most of the units are from Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited. The last unit of 200 MW was commissioned in 1982.

Obra Thermal Power Station is commissioned in August 1967. The approved capacity of this thermal power plant is 1350 Megawatt. The installed capacity is also 1350 Megawatt. The status of this thermal power plant is Operational. The source of coal is from Jharia Coal fields. The source of water for the cooling system of plant is obtained from Adjacent Obra dam on Rihind River. The primary fuel used for the generation of power is Coal and the secondary fuel used is Fuel Oil. The Type of Plant is Sub Critical Thermal Power Plant. The Manufacturer of Boiler of power plant is Taganrog Russia (Unit 1 to 5) and BHEL Haridwar (Unit 6 to 13). Also the manufacturer of Turbine is LMZ Russia (Unit 1 to 5) and BHEL Haridwar (Unit 6 to 13). The manufacturer of Generator is Electrosila (Unit 1 to 5) and BHEL Haridwar (Unit 6 to 13). The Obra Thermal Power Station is owned and operated by the Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (UPRVUNL). The beneficiary states of this thermal power plant are Uttar Pradesh and its neighbouring states.

There are five units in operation and they are from Unit 9 to Unit 13. The Unit 1 to Unit 8 are retired in between the years of 2017 and 2018. The ninth unit is commissioned in 26 January 1980 with an installed capacity of 200 Megawatt. After that the tenth unit is commissioned in 14 January 1979 with an installed capacity of 200 Megawatt. The eleventh unit is commissioned in 31 December 1977 with an installed capacity of 200 Megawatt. Also the twelfth unit is commissioned in 28 March 1981 with an installed capacity of 200 Megawatt.
