The Patratu Thermal Power Plant is situated at Patratu town of Ramgarh district in Jharkhand, India. The total installed capacity of Patratu Thermal Power Plant is 840 MW.

This is a sub critical thermal power station. Here Coal and Oil are used as primary fuel and secondary fuel respectively. The main source of coal is from nearby coal mines in Jharkhand. The electric power grid of the power station is connected to the regional grid. Patratu Super Thermal Power Project, a joint venture company with NTPC (74% share) and Jharkhand state government (26% share) is currently in under-construction mode. The new power plant will have 4000 MW (800 MW × 5 units), in the site of existing power plant. Currently the plant has ten installed units. The first four units have an installed capacity of 50 MW each. The fifth and sixth units have the installed capacity of 100 MW each and the seventh to tenth units have the capacity of 110 MW each. The commissioned dates of all units are:

Unit 1 – 1 October 1966

Unit 2 – 1 June 1967

Unit 3 – 1 February 1969

Unit 4 – 1 January 1970

Unit 5 – 17 December 1971

Unit 6 – 13 March 1972

Unit 7 – 17 January 1977

Unit 8 – 2 March 1978

Unit 9 – 30 March 1984

Unit 10 – 2 March 1986

Taganrov USSR (Unit 1 to 4), Taganrov Russia (Unit 5 and 6) and BHEL Hyderabad (Unit 7 to 10) are the boiler manufacturers for the plant. The turbine manufacturers of the plant are LMZ Russia (Unit 1 to 6) and BHEL Hyderabad (Unit 7 to 10). The generator manufacturers of the plant are Electrosila (Unit 1 to 6) and BHEL Hyderabad (Unit 7 to 10).The power plant is owned by Jharkhand State Electricity Board (JSEB) under State Government.
