Periyar Hydroelectric Project

Periyar Hydroelectric Project is erected in the Periyar Lake of Theni District in the state of Tamil Nadu in India. The power project is commissioned from 1958 to 1965 with a total installed capacity of 140 MW. The basin of power plant is Periyar River. The type of plant erected in the power station is dam on river with reservoir. The project status is now functional. The main reservoir, where the project is located is Periyar Lake. The Hydroelectric Region, where the power project is situated is Southern Hydroelectric Region. The power station is having one surface powerhouse with a Vertical Pelton Turbine. The river, where the water is sourced for the power project is Periyar River.

The power plant is owned by Tamil Nadu State Government and the operator of the plant is Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation Limited (TANGEDCO). The Beneficiary States of the Periyar Hydroelectric Project are Tamil Nadu and Kerala. The power project is constructed in 1958 and started its operations in the same year itself. The type of Turbine used in the power project is Vertical Francis. The maker of turbine of project is J.M. Voith Germany and the maker of generator of project is AEG, Germany. There are four turbines in the plant and capacity for each turbine is 35 MW. The Unit Sizes of the plant is 140 MW. There are four units in the plant and all the four units are commissioned.
