Sipat Thermal Power Station otherwise called as the Rajiv Gandhi Super Thermal Power Station is erected at Sipat region in the district of Bilaspur of Chhattisgarh. The thermal power plant is one among the coal utilised power plants of National Thermal Power Corporation Limited. The source of coal for operating the power plant was from Dipika Mines of South Eastern Coalfields Limited. Whereas the source of water is from RBC originating from Hasdeo Barrage.
The project has an approved capacity of 2980 Megawatt and installed capacity of Sipat Thermal Power Station is 2980 Megawatt. The Power Station is located at the Ujjwal Nagar of Sipat in the district, Bilaspur of Chhattisgarh in India. The Beneficiary States of Sipat Thermal Power Station were Chhattisgarh, Dadra & Nagar Haveli, Daman & Diu, Goa, Gujarat, M.P and Maharashtra.
The sipat power station currently has five generating units. They are Unit 1, Unit 2 and Unit 3. The first unit was commissioned in June 2011 with an installed capacity of 660 Megawatt. The second unit was commissioned in December 2011 with an installed capacity of 660 Megawatt. The third unit was commissioned in June 2012 with an installed capacity of 660 Megawatt. Similarly fourth and fifth units which are the oldest 500 Megawatt generating sets was commissioned in May 2007 and August 2008 respectively. The fourth and fifth units combined are sometimes referred to as ‘Sipat 2 power station’, whereas the most recently commissioned Unit 1, Unit 2 and Unit 3 are referred to as ‘Sipat 1 power station’.
The 3 units of 660 Megawatt each comprising super-critical boilers technology and stage two comprised of 2 units of 500 Megawatt each.The two 500 Megawatt units were constructed/installed with the financial support from global financial agencies called Asian Development Bank. The then Prime Minister of India, Dr Manmohan Singh launched and inaugurated the Sipat Thermal Power Plant on September 20, 2013.
