Varahi Hydro Power Plant

Varahi Hydro Power Plant is located near Hosangadi in the Udupi district of Karnataka in India. The power project is commissioned in 1993 with an approved and installed capacity of 460 Megawatt. The type of HE Project is Major as the capacity is greater than 25 MW and the type of Powerhouse is underground. The status of power plant is Operational. The source of water for the generation of power is Varahi River. The basin of powerhouse is west flowing rivers from Tadri to Kanyakumari. The power house is located in the Southern Hydroelectric Region. The Hydroelectric Development type is Run of the River Process. The power plant is owned by State Government and the operating organisation is Karnataka Power Corporation Limited.

The beneficiary states of power plant are Karnataka and other south Indian states. The hydroelectric power project is completed in 1989 and its activity is started in 1989 also. There are four turbines in operation and capacity per each turbine is 115 MW. The type of Turbine used is Pelton. And the turbine and Generator of the hydroelectric project is manufactured by Bharat Heavy Electricals limited of India. There are four units in operation and all the four unites are commissioned. The Unit size of power plant is 460 MW having 4 units of 115 MW each.

How to Reach: Varahi Hydroelectric Power Project is situated near to Hosangadi town in the Udupi district of Karnataka. The nearest bus station is Hosangadi Bus Station, in which there are regular buses passing through the power station is available throughout the day. Kundapura is the nearest Railway Station, which is located at about 29 km from power station. Hosangadi does not have an airport and the nearest airport is Bajpe Airport, which is located at about 88 km away.
