Vedanta Jharsuguda Captive Power Plant is a coal fired CPP erected near to the Jharsuguda town in Jharsuguda district of Odisha. The power plant is owned and functioned by the Vedanta Resources. It distributes power to aluminum smelter of Vedanta Resources.

Ib Valley Coalfield supplies the coal required for the plant and the water requirement of the plant is sourced from the reservoir of Hirakud Dam. The Coal, which is collected from the Mahanadhi Coal Field is transported to the power station is through bottom discharge wagons. The Engineering, procurement and construction, EPC agreement is given to the SEPCO3 of China.The coal fuelled natural circulation Boiler, Turbine and Generator for the power plant is manufactured by the ‘Shangai Electric’. The plant generates around 1,215 Megawatt using the nine, 135 Megawatt units (9x135 MW). Also the CPP of Vedanta Limited is located at Jharsuguda, which is the largest Captive Power Plant of the country.

Vedanta Jharsuguda Captive Power Plant is commissioned in July 2008. It has an approved capacity of 1215 Megawatt and the installed capacity is also 1215 Megawatt. The status of the thermal power plant is Operational. The source of coal is from the Ib Valley Coalfield. The source of water is from the reservoir of Hirakud Dam, which is taken over a distance of 33 kilometers. The primary fuel used is Coal. The Vedanta Jharsuguda Captive Power Plant is owned and operated by the Vedanta Resources. The type of plant is Sub Critical. The EPC contract is taken by theSEPCO3 of China. The beneficiary states of the thermal power plant are Odisha and its neighbouring states. The Unit Sizes of the thermal power plant are 1215 Megawatt (9 units x 135 Megawatt).

There are nine units in operation and they are from Unit 1 to Unit 9. All the nine units are commissioned in regular intervals from July 2008 onwards with an installed capacity of 135 Megawatt for each units.

Vedanta Jharsuguda Captive Power Plant is erected from about fivekilometres away from the busy town of Jharsuguda. It is located just about 7 kilometres away from the Jharsuguda Town. You will get bus, taxi, train or flight to visit the Power Station. By Road, you would get local buses or taxi services from the town to Power Station. Jharsuguda Railway Station is the nearest well-connected railway station. While Jharsuguda Airport is the nearest airport, which is located at about 8 kilometers away from Power Station.
