The Vindhyachal Thermal Power Station is located at Singrauli district in the state of Madhya Pradesh. One of the main coal-consumed power stations of National Thermal Power Corporation, it is the chief power station in the country, with an approved capacity of 4760 Megawatt. Vindhyachal Thermal Power Plant is commissioned in 1987. The approved capacity of this thermal power plant is 4760 Megawatt. The installed capacity is 3760 Megawatt. The status of this thermal power plant is Operational. The primary fuel utilized for the generation of power is coal. The source of coal is from Nigahi Mines, whereas the source of water is from water release canal of Singrauli Thermal Power Station. The power plant is owned and sponsored by National Thermal Power Corporation Limited. The Beneficiary States of this thermal power plant are Chattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Union Territories of India including Daman & Diu, and Dadar & Nagar Haveli.

The Approved Investment on Stage 1 and Stage 2 is accounted at about INR 4053.42 crore and Stage 3 is about INR 4201.5 crore. There are eleven units in operation and they are from Unit 1 to Unit 11. The first unit is commissioned in October 1987 with an installed capacity of 210 Megawatt. The second unit is commissioned in July 1988 with an installed capacity of 210 Megawatt. The Third unit is commissioned in February 1989 with an installed capacity of 210 Megawatt. The fourth unit is commissioned in December 1989 with an installed capacity of 210 Megawatt. The fifth unit is commissioned in March 1990 with an installed capacity of 210 Megawatt. The sixth unit is commissioned in February 1991 with an installed capacity of 210 Megawatt.

The seventh unit is commissioned in March 1999 with an installed capacity of 500 Megawatt. The eighth unit is commissioned in February 2000 with an installed capacity of 500 Megawatt. The ninth unit is commissioned in July 2006 with an installed capacity of 500 Megawatt. The tenth unit is commissioned in March 2007 with an installed capacity of 500 Megawatt. At last, the eleventh unit is commissioned in June 2012 with an installed capacity of 500 Megawatt. The international Assistance is provided by Soviet Union and World Bank.
