The Tapovan Vishnugad Hydropower Plant is a 520 Megawatt hydroelectric project being built on Dhauliganga River in Chamoli of Uttarakhand. The plant is anticipated to produce over 2.5k Gigawatt hours of power per annum.

Tapovan Vishnugad is National Thermal Power Corporation Limited’s second hydro power project ever since its venture into the hydro based power projects. The 520 Megawatt project is located on river Dhauliganga in Joshimath of district Chamoli in the state Uttarakhand. Its’ expedition begun with National Thermal Power Corporation Limited arriving into an understanding with the Govt. of Uttarakhand for possibility study for the project on 2002 December and then signing the Operation Contract on the month of june in 2004. Presently, it is in advanced phase of construction with around seventy percent of the execution finished. The project has set its target for commissioning in first half on Fiscal Year 2020-21.

The Foundation Stone of the Power Plant was laid by Shri Padanatha Mohammed Sayeed, the then Union Minister for Power in the month of February in 2005 in the presence of Shri ND Tiwari, who is the then Chief Minister of Uttarakhand.

The hydro power plant is situated downstream on the Alaknanda River that comprise four 130 Megawatt Pelton turbine-generators. The dam is being built across the Dhauliganga River and has a catchment region of 3,100 square kilometer.

BHEL was granted the agreement to source four 130 Megawatt Pelton type turbines for the Tapovan Vishnugad hydroelectric power project. The prescribed scope also comprised the testing, assigning and set-up of the generators, switchgear and excitation system.

The construction of Tapovan Vishnugad Hydropower Plant is begun in November 2006 and has an approved capacity of 520 Megawatt. The installation of Power plant is under construction. It would be completed in the second half of year 2020. The opening date of this Tapovan Vishnugad Hydropower Plant would be in September 2020 and the commission date of this power plant is also in 2020. The water source for the generation of power is Dhauliganga River. The plant is managed by the National Thermal Power Corporation Limited. The beneficiary state of this power plant is Uttarakhand. The approved investment would be around INR 2979 Crore. There are four units in operation for this Tapovan Vishnugad Hydropower Plant. They are Unit 1, Unit 2, Unit 3 and Unit 4.
