Thermal Power Stations:

Ennore Thermal Power Station (ETPS)

Ennore Thermal Power Station is located in the Ennore town of Chennai district in Tamil Nadu. The power plant is a coal fuelled thermal power plant. There are five units in Operation with first unit being commissioned in 31 March 1970. The primary fuel used in the thermal power plant is Bituminous coal. The total installed capacity of the plant is 450 MW. For that, the first two units have an installed capacity of 60 Megawatt each and the remaining three units have an installed capacity of 110 Megawatt each.

Mettur Thermal Power Station (MTPS)

Mettur Thermal Power Station is located in the Salem district of Tamil Nadu. The power plant is a coal fired thermal power plant. There are five units commissioned with first being commissioned in 7 January 1987. The status of the power plant is Operational. The power station is owned and operated by the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation Limited. The type of primary fuel used is Bituminous coal. The total installed capacity of the power plant is 1440 MW. For that, the first four units have an installed capacity of 210 Megawatt each and the fifth unit have an installed capacity of 600 Megawatt.

North Chennai Thermal Power Station (NCTPS)

North Chennai Thermal Power Station is a coal based power plant located at about 25 kilometres from Chennai City in the Thiruvallur district of Tamil Nadu. The power plant was commissioned in 25 October 1994. The status of the power plant is functional and is under the control of Tamil Nadu Electricity Board Limited. The primary fuel used is coal (bituminous). The total installed capacity of the thermal power plant is 1830 Megawatt. The first three units of plant is having a capacity of 210 Megawatt each and the fourth and fifth units are having 600 Megawatt each.

Tuticorin Thermal Power Station (TTPS)

Tuticorin Thermal Power Station is located adjacent to the Newport of Thoothukudi district in Tamil Nadu. The power plant is commissioned in 9 July 1979. The status of the power station is Operational. The primary fuel used for power generation is Bituminous coal. There are five units in operation, of which all of the five units are having an installed capacity of 210 MW each. The total capacity of the power plant is 1050 Megawatt.

Nuclear power stations:

Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant

Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant would be the single largest power plant in India. It is currently under Construction. Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant is located in the Kudankulam village in Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu. The construction of the power plant was begun in 31 March 2002 and the power plant is commissioned in 22 October 2013. The owner and operator of the power plant is Nuclear Power Corporation of India. There are two units in operation (2 x 917 MW), two units under construction (2 x 917 MW) and two units planned (2 x 917 MW). Every unit would have an installed capacity of 917 Megawatt each.

Madras Atomic Power Station - 470 MW (2x235, 1X500 (Under construction))

Madras Atomic Power Station is located at Kalpakam, which is around 80 km away from the south Chennai. The power plant started its construction in 1970 and it was commissioned in 24 January 1984. The power plant is owned and operated by Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited. There are two units in Operation, which has an installed capacity of 235 MW each. The power plant thus has a total installed capacity of 470 Megawatt. Also 1 unit having 500 MW is under construction and 2 units having 600 MW capacity each is planned.
